The Red Witch, designated as the 2003 Ohio Bicentennial Flagship, is a living tribute to U. S. maritime history and her designer, John G. Alden. The Red Witch was built in 1986 in Bayou Le Batre, Alabama. She was build in the tradition of the vessels that were the workhorses of America’s 19th century transportation system. True to her ancestos, her block and tackle, wooden hull, and gaff rig capture the romance and adventure of sail. She is 77 feet long, 73 feet high, 41 gross tons, and built of mahogany. Built expressly for chartering, she worked in San Diego and Hawaii from 1987 through 1996. In 1997 the Red Witch started plying the waters of western Lake Erie. She now resides in Chicago, Illinois.
